Bangladesh is to start a nationwide vaccination drive against Covid-19 from Sunday, with an aim to vaccinate three and a half million people within the first month.
The vaccination program is expected to be inaugurated at 9am on 7th February , Sunday.
The government, Serum Institute of India and the Dhaka-based company Beximco Pharmaceuticals inked an agreement on Nov. 5 last year to procure 30 million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine. The first shipment of 5 million shots has already arrived.
Earlier, DGHS Director General Dr ABM Khurshid Alam announced that he himself along with the health minister and DGHS officials will be administered with the vaccines on the first day of the vaccination drive.
According to a government decision, the vaccine recipients will receive their second dose four weeks after the first jab instead of eight weeks.
Last month, Health Minister Zahid Maleque said the ministry had provided training to 42,000 health workers and volunteers to facilitate the vaccination program. Similarly, the DGHS said some 7,344 teams would be deployed throughout the country during the inoculation drive.
A recent study conducted in the country found high numbers of asymptomatic cases, with over 45% of people in Dhaka having already having developed antibodies against COVID-19.
